SSDS – Solid State Drives

SSDs, or solid state drives are data storage media made of semiconductors rather than a magnetic disk such as hard drives (HDD). SSDs function like hard drives, but with different technology. Solid-State Drives (SSD), do not have any moving parts, hence the name ‘solid state’. Without moving parts, SSDs can withstand higher extremes of shock, drop and temperature. These drives use a newer technology called flash storage that stores your data on small chips inside of little cells.

SSDs are becoming more and more popular in computers and laptops, such as notebook computers. SSDs are perfectly suited for ultraportable laptops because they consume less power than in spinning mechanical conventional hard disk drives.  Apple, Alienware, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, Asus, Sony, Motion Computer, and HP are amongst the brands offering this solid state storage technology.

Why SSDs are becoming more popular with portable PCs?

SSDs are attractive when considering speed, noise, power consumption, and reliability.  In terms of speed, SSDs provide peak performance for booting and high read/write performance for computing that requires enhanced multitasking capabilities. SSDs also consume approximately half the power of traditional hard drives of the same size. For example, a 2.5 inch Samsung SSD consumes less than 1 watt of power when active, as compared with 2.1 watts that a standard 2.5 inch HDD consumes.

SSDs come as Internal SSDs for primary storage mounted   inside your desktop computer and laptop. There are also external SSDs which are stationary or portable   drives   attached via a USB or FireWire connection, or wirelessly.  In Kenya, you can get SanDisk SSDs, Transcend, LEXAR, Crucial, Samsung, Western Digital (WD), Klevv and HIKVISION brands.  These SSDs are available in 64GB, 128GB, 256 GB, 480 GB, 512 GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities.

In summary SSDs provide a great technology for upgrading laptop storage.  Perhaps the crucial question to ask is: which brand and capacity will you need for   your device? Generally, all brands of SSDs can provide great performance   to meet your needs.
